Dimple Kapadia is an iconic figure in Indian cinema. From her memorable debut at the age of 16 in "Bobby" to her versatile performances in critically acclaimed films, Dimple Kapadia has left an indelible mark on Bollywood. Throughout her career, Dimple Kapadia has portrayed a wide range of roles in various genres of films. She is known for her versatility and has delivered noteworthy performances in movies such as "Saagar," "Rudaali," "Dil Chahta Hai," and "Finding Fanny," among others.
Today, we have a look at Dimple Kapadia’s home in Mumbai, where she once resided. Today, this luxurious abode has been demolished by its new buyer, the executive chairman at Mumbai-based Allcargo Logistics, Shashi Shetty. So, get ready to go back in time and unveil this iconic residence in Mumbai that was once home to the Bollywood veteran:
Nestled in the heart of Mumbai's Bandra neighbourhood, on the picturesque Carter Road, once was the legendary residence - Aashirwad. This was the late actor Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia's home in Mumbai. Bandra, often referred to as the "Queen of Suburbs," is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, stunning seaside views, and thriving community of artists, celebrities, and socialites.
This house exuded grandeur and charm and was a testament to the opulent lifestyle of the celebrated couple. This iconic abode was located opposite the Arabian Sea and defined the cityscape. In its time, it also attracted tourists from all across the world.
The current market value of the land is estimated to be a staggering Rs 200 crore which highlights its significance as a highly coveted location. This figure is not surprising considering the prime location and the aura of the place. Bandra, known for its trendy cafes, upscale boutiques, and bustling streets, commands an average cost of approximately Rs 41,000 per square foot for apartments in the area.
Dimple Kapadia's former Mumbai residence, designed by Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla, became the inspiration for a remarkable exhibition at Selfridges in London. For an entire month in 2003, Londoners had the extraordinary opportunity to witness a recreated portion of Dimple Kapadia home in Mumbai in the renowned department store. Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla meticulously recreated an entire floor, transforming the space into a Bollywood-themed haven. You can get an idea of how opulent and extraordinary each nook and corner of Dimple’s abode must have been, even back then!
The exhibition featured the presence of iconic celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, and Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla. They all posed in the Selfridges version of Dimple's home. A particularly eye-catching element was the regal bed, intricately carved from wood and adorned with spectacular silver plating. The luxurious ambience was further enhanced by a backdrop embellished with Zardozi work, completing the exquisite bed chamber decor.
The passing of Rajesh Khanna left a void in the hearts of his fans and the film industry. In accordance with his request, his wife Dimple Kapadia renamed the home 'Vardan Aashirwad,' preserving his memory and legacy. Furthermore, plans were underway to transform Rajesh Khanna's house into a museum, allowing the public to immerse themselves in the life and times of this legendary actor.
However, these plans were never executed as the residence was sold off to Shashi Shetty- executive chairman at Mumbai-based Allcargo Logistics. The 6,500 sq. ft. sea-facing bungalow was sold for Rs 95 crore, much less than what was initially predicted.
As Mumbai evolves and modernises, Dimple Kapadia home in Mumbai remains an everlasting reminder of the rich cinematic heritage and the charisma of Bollywood's biggest icons. These were some of the many aspects that make Dimple’s residence a luxurious abode.
