Here are some interesting details of this Kumar Mangalam Birla house in one of Mumbai’s toniest areas, namely Malabar Hill.

  • The property is estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 1.5 lakh per square foot which is a huge amount in the city’s real estate circles.

  • It was previously under the ownership of the sons of leading industrialist MP Jatia, namely Shyam M Jatia and Arun M Jatia.

  • The premier bungalow occupies a sizeable 2,926 square metres on 38 Gibbs Road, with its built-up area estimated at a massive 28,000 square feet.

  • MP Jatia purchased the property from Meher Cawasji Vakeel in 1971 and it was purchased by Kumar Mangalam Birla after an exciting auction. He surpassed the bids of five other bidders for the property, including leading industrialist Ajay Piramal. He paid 10% of the value as the token amount.

  • The Jatia family is the one behind the famous Pudumjee Paper Mills. The company founder, MP Jatia, shifted to Mumbai from Burma earlier in 1964 due to political unrest.

  • The bungalow is also the venue for the famous parties given by the Jatia family earlier, where they would host close to 500-700 people at a time.

  • Jatia House also comes with sprawling corridors, airy and spacious bedrooms and other spaces which are fully done up in marble.

  • It has a sprawling garden with a central courtyard and pond.

This is not the only Kumar Mangalam Birla house in Mumbai. The iconic business personality has also retained another two-storied apartment in the II Palazzo building in Malabar Hill, where he grew up and spent his formative years. Some other updates reveal that a group company of the Aditya Birla Group, namely B G H Properties, has purchased yet another bungalow named Sunny Ville on the posh Carmichael Road in South Mumbai. This bungalow sprawls over half an acre and was purchased for approximately Rs. 220 crores.

It is a ground-plus-two-storied mansion that is located in close proximity to Jatia House. The total area for construction is estimated to be around 19,000 square feet in addition to several covered garages. The plot and bungalow were bought from the surviving will executors of the Estate of Ernie Kharshedji Dubash. Stamp duty of Rs. 13.20 crore was paid for registering the transaction as per reports.
