Inside Bollywood Director Karan Johar's Posh House in Mumbai

Despite being the brains behind the silver screen hits we enjoy, very few directors and filmmakers enjoy the popularity and fame of actors in this country. Karan Johar, or KJo as he is fondly known, may well be an exception. This award-winning director has doled out several hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, My Name is Khan, and Razi. Apart from producing several other mega-hits under his banner Dharma Productions, KJo was also a successful TV host to his own show Koffee with Karan. This Padma Shri recipient is known for his flamboyant fashion style and tongue-in-cheek retorts. His home is just as flashy and quirky as his personality. It is no wonder then that film-goers across the nation want a sneak peek into Karan Johar's house in Bandra.

KJo's Extravagant Mumbai Home

Karan Johar, his children Yash and Roohi, and KJo's mother Hiroo Johar live in a sprawling 8000 square feet duplex apartment. This plush home is located on the 12th floor of The Residency, one of the premier residential apartments in Carter Road, Bandra. As most Mumbaikars may be aware, Bandra is one of the most expensive and posh neighbourhoods in the city and is known for its celebrity residents. The house is estimated to be worth about INR 30 crore and has been featured in several architectural and lifestyle magazines worldwide. The filmmaker is believed to have an annual income of INR 100 crore and owns several properties in India and abroad.

Stunning Terrace Design

While every part of KJo's fabulous home is click-worthy, the expansive terrace is possibly its best feature; it certainly has grabbed the attention of fans and journalists. The tinted reflective mirror doors, the grand sculpted bar, and the marble and wood lounge tables – this entertainment area is every bit as dramatic as Johar's movies. This stunning terrace was custom-designed by Gauri Khan, the celebrity interior designer and wife of Shah Rukh Khan. The terrace is all done up in a black-and-white colour scheme. The walls are all white, and the floor is fitted with dramatic geometric-patterned tiles.  

The Party Place

The expansive and expensive living room is not nearly as loud or dramatic but is every bit a royal affair. The blue-green tartan sofa is flanked by a beautiful beige couch on one side and armchairs designed by Gauri Khan on the other. Opposite this is a fluted sofa by Roberto Cavalli Home. The black glass and wood coffee table and the beige rug are visual delights, but the best feature of this space is indeed the large marble chandelier that lights up the entire space. Karan Johar's house with its eloquent design and bold furnishings. Right behind the seating area is a large dining space with an eight-seater marble-top table and a beautiful black and white wall painting. KJo is known for his legendary parties, and this is the scene of action.

The Dream Closet

Renowned designer Simone Dubash Pundole designed Karan Johar's bedroom and this space is very different from the rest of the home. The extensive use of wood gives the room a modern yet comfortable vibe. The wardrobe furniture and floor are all polished wood, and the bed has a rich leather finish. The filmmaker's closet, however, is the highlight of his home. Made to showcase his jazzy collection of clothes and fashion accessories, the wooden walk-in closet is fitted with floor-length mirrors on both sides and has a separate changing area.

Gauri Khan Magic

Apart from the fabulous terrace, Gauri Khan also designed the kids' room. The twins were born in 2017 and are featured in many of KJo's Instagram and social media posts. Their bedroom is done up in French colonial style, with white as the predominant colour. The white arched shelf with backlight is the highlight of the room and is perfect for the kids' toys. Despite the predominance of white, this room is far from boring. The children love the colourful stars, floor mats, and the wonderful play area.

Karan Johar’s house in Mumbai is one of the most popular celebrity houses in town, more so because of the fabulous parties he throws and his love of socialising. The bold and bright decor, the black flooring and quirky decor pieces like a Kintsugi coffee table and a half-marble half-wood dining table make this home the subject of several interior features.
