A clean home is a healthy home, they say. The COVID-19 pandemic and its disastrous fallout on our health and well-being have helped drive the point home. Even as wave after wave of the pandemic continued to affect us, our homes, flats and apartments became our safe havens. We have learned our lesson, and keeping our residential apartments clean and disinfected is now part of our routine chores.

Here are some ways you can sanitise your flat to prevent the spread of infections and diseases.

  1. Floor cleaning – Sweeping and mopping the floor is part of our routine cleaning activities. The floor attracts dirt, dust, germs, and footprints. Sweeping helps remove the dust, and mopping removes stains and marks. Adding a strong disinfectant solution to the water used to mop floors can help remove germs and pathogens we may have tracked in with our shoes. A non-toxic disinfectant may also be good if you have small children or pets.
  2. Surface sanitisation – When we come home from work or school, we touch a number of surfaces without having the opportunity to wash our hands or sanitise them. The doorbell, doorknob, handles, shoe racks, coat stand, key racks, and foyer area – these require special attention when cleaning and sanitising the household. Using disinfectant wipes or sprays and sanitising them daily will prevent them from becoming vectors for germs.
  3. Kitchen Cleaning – Where we cook food requires the greatest attention when it comes to cleaning and sanitisation. Keep a closed trashcan in the kitchen and take out the garbage daily. Use non-toxic, food-grade cleaners to clean and sanitise the counters, hobs, ovens, sinks, and cupboards daily. Clean out the insides of the refrigerator and the oven every week, and check your pantry for spoiled food items ever so often. Wash and disinfect the dishcloths and aprons in the kitchen every other day.
  4. Bathroom cleaning – The bathroom and the toilet are arguably the dampest corners of your home. This makes them the perfect environment for germs and fungi to grow and spread. Investing in a strong bathroom and toilet bowl cleaner that can remove stains and disinfect is a good idea. Airing and ventilating the bathroom regularly is also a good idea.
  5. Deep cleaning – From time to time, it is essential to enlist professional help. The curtains, rugs, carpets, and upholstery require shampooing and deep cleaning every 3-4 months. From pollen to pathogens, everything can be removed with the help of disinfectant cleaners. Signing up for a DIY home cleaning and sanitisation course may be a good idea to help you design a disinfection schedule for every part, nook, and corner of your household.

Conclusion

Cleaning and sanitising the household sounds laborious, but once it is part of your regular routine, keeping your home germ free takes a few extra minutes each day. Living in a project with flats and apartments means getting together with other homeowners and installing hand sanitisers near the reception or elevator. This can go a long way in keeping the residents safe. The common areas also need a regular sanitisation and disinfection routine.
