The living room of your flat or apartment is where you relax with your family, host your friends and loved ones, and settle in to binge-watch the latest Netflix series. Keeping this space clean and clutter-free defines your home experience.

Here are some quick tips to get your living room organised in minutes.

  1. Go minimal – The best way to clean and organise your living room is by picking a minimalistic décor. Going minimal does not mean having a bare room. It means looking for pieces of furniture or décor that serve multiple purposes and have been purposefully picked without being randomly added. Keeping the number of furniture and décor pieces low can help reduce the need to deep clean too often.
  2. Bigger, better, bolder – Go big and make a statement. This means giving up on your collection of trinkets, curios, and knickknacks, in favour of that one bold piece of wall art or one stunning sculpture which will be the showstopper of your living room. If you love displaying family photos, turn your accent wall into a gallery. This makes it easier to clean and get rid of clutter.
  3. Flat surfaces first – When it comes to daily cleaning and routine decluttering, start with the flat surfaces of your living room. The sofa or couch becomes riddled with clothes, books, and shopping bags, your coffee table or dresser top could be holding things completely out of place. Put these away and clean the flat surfaces to organise your home quickly.
  4. A home for everything – Remaining clutter-free is a conscious choice. Design a home which has space for all the essentials. For example, when you return home from work, do you toss your keys on the table? Place a small bowl in the foyer to hold all the keys. Does your shoe rack have space for shoe shiners and accessories? Does the TV unit have space for your collection of movies and CDs? Do your books have a closed bookshelf? Design a space for everything in your living room to clean it in a jiffy.
  5. Tie them up – Wires, cables, chargers, extension cords, plugs – you name it, and we all have an excess of it. One way to keep your living room from devolving into a mess of electrical connections, electronic chargers, and cables is by designing a separate box or cabinet for these - somewhere you can put away your phone, tablet, or other chargeable devices. Not only does this help clean and dust things easily, but it also keeps you from misplacing your phone and other electronics.
  6. Find hidden storage areas – Look for areas in your living room that are usually ignored or considered superfluous. Convert these into storage spaces to hold the little things you need to put away. A spare cushion, a throw rug, old magazines or coffee table books that you don’t want to give away or display just yet – find spaces to store these. A small cupboard built into the back of your sofa or couch, a small shelf in the bookcase, or a space under the coffee table can come in handy.

Conclusion

Cleaning and organising the living room involves a routine you must develop. Dusting every day, vacuuming every week, and deep cleaning and sending the carpet and curtains out to be dry cleaned every few months is a great way to keep your living space looking shiny all the time.
