Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was one of India's best-known traders and investors in the Indian financial markets. An inspiration to millions of Indian investors who dream of making it big, Jhunjhunwala was also a firm believer in the India Growth Story.
Having started with a meagre capital of about INR 5000, this financial wizard built up a net worth of about INR 25,425 crore when he passed away in 2022. His spectacular rags-to-riches story results from patience, wisdom, and experience in the Indian financial markets. Before his death, Jhunjhunwala commissioned a sprawling house in one of the poshest neighbourhoods of Mumbai, Malabar Hills. Let us take a virtual tour of this lavish and luxurious mansion.
Despite his immense wealth, ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala firmly believed in family values, ethical business codes, and patriotism. One of his passion projects was a 14-storey residential bungalow in the upscale Malabar Hills neighbourhood. Jhunjhunwala and his wife are reported to have spent nearly INR 371 crore in buying up the property. The building that was called Ridgeway Apartments was then demolished to construct this ultra-luxurious residence. While he did not survive to see its completion, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's house is one of the most expensive private residences in the country.
The 14-storey bungalow was constructed by Aakar Architects and Consultants and is built over a 2700-square-foot plot and is about 57 metres high. The highlight of the house is the party area on the terrace. The glass pavilion encompasses a large hall with a number of different seating options, including a sizeable multi-seater dining table, a bar counter, a pizza counter, and a kitchen area. Outside the gazebo is an outdoor seating lounge and a vegetable garden. The 757-square-foot terrace area offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and is indeed fit for royalty.
The master bedroom of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's house is a high perch on the 12th floor of the building. With marble flooring, a giant bed, an incredible walk-in closet and two dressing rooms, this bedroom suite is spread over a 731-square-foot area. This floor also has a private study, a salon area, a small pantry, two bathrooms and powder rooms, and a staff room. The master bedroom is attached to a large balcony deck.
His daughter, Nishtha, and twin sons, Aryaman and Aryaveer, have large bedroom spaces on the floor just below this. Like the top floor, this storey too has a private lounge area, study, and long balconies. The tenth floor is dedicated to four stunningly designed and decorated guest bedrooms. However, the larger section of this floor is dedicated to family space. Apart from the large living area, where the family is meant to spend time together, this floor also has a large kitchen, a puja room, and a family dining space with a balcony view.
The ninth floor is dedicated to a large and well-equipped home office. There are several private meeting spaces, a conference facility, a staff room, and a pantry. This area is now used by Rekha Jhunjhunwala, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's wife, and her staff. The seventh and eighth floors have been combined in a seamless fashion. The seventh floor has an expansive infinity pool, and part of the eighth-floor ceiling has been removed for an alfresco experience. The eighth floor has a state-of-the-art gymnasium and fitness centre with a spa and sauna, a massage room, and several bathrooms and showers.
The fifth floor of this stately mansion is a fun area. A huge home theatre, done up with all the trappings of modern luxury, is combined with a massive lounge here. The fourth floor is a massive banquet area. The huge L-shaped kitchen is designed to service the parties held here. There are outdoor lounges here when guests want to step out and catch a glimpse of the sparkling city skyline. The sixth floor is a service and storage area.
The lower levels have storage space, staff quarters, bathrooms, and multiple parking spaces.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's house in Malabar Hills epitomises luxury and opulence. It is a beacon of hope to dedicated and industrious investors and entrepreneurs that this country holds much promise to those with the faith and fortitude to pursue their dreams.
