Have you noticed how many hotels and high-rises do not have a 13th floor? The floor numbers go from 12 to 14, without a floor being numbered 13. In many housing projects, the flat or apartment numbers move from 12 to 14. Similarly, many are reluctant to buy a house or apartment numbered 13. The number is often referred to as unlucky. Is there any truth to this, or is it a myth? If you are a Hindu, should you avoid apartment 13? Let's delve deeper into this and understand the significance of the number 13.

Origins of Unlucky 13

Fear of the number 13, often referred to as triskaidekaphobia, is believed to hrave originated from the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th person to be seated at the table. Some also believe that this superstition believed when King Philip IV of France ordered the Knights Templar to be arrested and tortured on 13 October 1307. Whatever the origin, many people, particularly those of Christian origin, seem to consider the number unlucky. In countries like Greece, though, the number 13 is considered auspicious and a symbol of incorruptible power and strength. Zeus, the 13th god, was deemed the most powerful in the pantheon.

Significance of 13 in Hinduism

In the Hindu religion, no fear or negative sentiment is attached to the number 13. In fact, the number 13 in Hinduism is considered very auspicious. The 13th day of the Hindu calendar month is referred to as the Trayodashi and is a day dedicated to the prayer of Lord Shiva. The Pradosha day, one of the most auspicious in the month, is the 13th day from the full moon and the no moon day. This means there are two Pradosha days in a Hindu calendar month, and both are celebrated. Maha Shivaratri, the grand annual festival of Lord Shiva, is celebrated on the 13th night of the Magh month.

13 According to Numerology

If you think number 13 in Hinduism brings good fortune, you must also take a look at what numerology has to say. In Chaldean numerology, too, 13 is a number that is associated with success and fortune. It is a powerful number that brings great opportunities for growth and development. It also represents spirituality and offers opportunities to better oneself. Other schools of numerology associate 13 with creativity and self-expression. Going by this school of thought, too, investing in an apartment or flat bearing the number 13 is a good idea.

Should I buy apartment 13?

Buying an apartment numbered 13 or a property on the 13th floor will not bring you bad luck. In fact, many Hindus prefer buying a property numbered 13 due to the number's association with Lord Shiva. Number 13 in Hinduism reflects strength and prosperity. If you are a staunch believer in numerology, you may want to purchase a property that is numerologically suited to your birthdate or your name number.

In general terms, it may be a good idea to consider other factors such as location, amenities, direction, and the flat or apartment's design rather than relying on the apartment number when buying a property.

The President who loved Number 13

India's former President, Sri Pranab Mukherjee, was well-known for his love of the number 13. He was India's 13th President and, for several years preceding his term, refused to move out of his residence at 13 Talkatora Road despite being eligible to occupy much more luxurious residences. He and his wife deemed this home lucky for his political career. As the former late President of India, Sri Pranab Mukherjee also held office in room no 13 of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. On a related note, the 13th President of India also wed his wife, Suvra Mukherjee, on 13 July 1957.

Conclusion

Movies, popular culture, and western thought processes have fueled the fear of 13. There is no evidence that the number is negative or brings any disturbing influence to homeowners who live in properties that are numbered 13. Homebuying, however, is a very emotional decision, and homeowners should opt for properties that bring them peace and joy. Those who believe in numerology or astrology may want to consult a reputed astrologer and find the number considered lucky according to their birth charts. It may also be a good idea to opt for a Vastu-compliant apartment. Real estate experts stress the need to verify documents and invest in a RERA-registered property rather than indulging superstitious beliefs.
