Interior decorators love mirrors. They use mirrors to make a room look spacious and open up smaller areas. Mirrors are also excellent when decorating flats and apartments with low natural light. These highly reflective surfaces amplify natural and artificial lighting, reducing energy needs and providing the home with a beautiful glow.

According to Feng Shui, mirrors are highly powerful objects that attract positivity, abundance, and prosperity. However, the placement of mirrors, according to this practice, can be a bit tricky. Let us look at some mirror dos and don'ts of Feng Shui mirror placement for good luck but let us start by understanding why mirrors are important for your household.

Why are mirrors important in Feng Shui?

The Chinese practice of Feng Shui acts on the principle that all spaces we live, work, and operate in are energetic reflections of our vibrations and the energy of the elements that make up the environment. The Life Force, commonly referred to as Chi, flows into these spaces (homes and offices in particular) and impacts our lives by placing décor items, images, paintings, plants etc. Mirrors are objects that reflect the truth of the environment. They are not creative and offer us the unsullied truth. They amplify any vibrations in the home or office and can be used to bring in good vibrations, but we also need to be very careful about where we set them up.

Feng Shui mirror placement for good luck

Mirrors in the living room – The living room is a good space to place a mirror. It elevates the aesthetics of the room and gives it more depth. There are some Feng Shui guidelines that you may want to follow with regard to the placement of the mirror, though. It is best to avoid placing the mirror facing the main door or entrance. The best place for a mirror is a side wall or an accent wall. The mirror is best placed at a spot where it reflects a garden or a nature view but not the bustling streets or city skyline.

Mirrors in the dining space – According to Feng Shui, the dining space is by far the best place for you to set up the mirror. Mirrors reflect and amplify what we place in front of them. The best place at home is a space where we share food, laughter, and good times. When placed in the dining area, mirrors bring prosperity and wealth and improve the bonding among family members.

Mirrors in the bedroom – The topic of mirror placement in the bedroom is a matter of great debate. While some believe these bring peaceful sleep and relaxation, others decry the placement in a private space. The one thing that most people agree on, though, is that if you must have a mirror in the bedroom due to space constraints, it should not reflect the bed you sleep on. If the mirror is positioned in front of the bed, you may want to use a curtain or a screen to shield the bed from the mirror.

Mirrors in the kitchen – While there are some theories about the placement of the mirror over a stove space, Feng Shui experts prohibit the placement of the mirror in the kitchen or cooking space. Mirrors belong to the water element, and adding them to a fiery space like the kitchen can attract discord, unhealthy competition, and restlessness in the home.

Mirror in the main entrance – It has become quite common for homeowners to place mirrors on the main door or entrance or directly over it. These could be for aesthetic purposes or superstitious ones. Feng Shui prohibits the placement of mirrors in the main entrance or gateway. These could deflect any good luck coming the way of your home or could trap negative vibrations. This mirror placement is best avoided.

Feng Shui tips for mirror maintenance

  • Use mirrors in moderation. Overdoing the use of mirrors can cause excess energy and attract chaos.
  • Keep the mirrors clean and blemish free. Broken or soiled mirrors attract bad luck and negativity. Maintain the mirrors in your home, keep them scratch free, and replace them immediately if they are damaged.
  • Use medium-sized mirrors. Avoid using very large or very small ones, and also avoid panelled mirrors or mirrors split into different frames.
  • If you think your room has an excess of water or earth-element-related objects, you can use a mirror with a metal frame to balance out the vibrations.
