Having access to natural light and ventilation is a wonderful thing. Most homeowners look for large windows and balconies when it comes to investing in residential apartments and homes. While this does wonders when it comes to bringing in light and fresh air, it also brings in the scorching heat and harsh rays of the sun. Now there are several ways to protect your home from the heat. You could use a cool and comfortable interior décor, turn on the air conditioning, and even use houseplants to cool down the temperature. However, nothing is quite as effective as window furnishings to keep the sun out.

More than just aesthetics

Window furnishings – drapes and curtains, valances, shades – are a very important part of the interior décor of your home. But these are more than just aesthetic additions. They are an important part of maintaining your home privacy and keeping the heat out of your home. Here are some of the types of window furnishings that you may want to consider.

  1. UV filters – While not considered part of traditional window furnishings, UV filter films are increasingly becoming a popular choice, particularly in warm and sunny areas. If your home faces the direct rays of the sun, this may be a good idea. These self-adhesive window films are easy to install and keep the UVA and UVB rays out. They help in reducing indoor heat and humidity levels as well.
  2. Heavy drapes – Heavy curtains are great at keeping the heat out, right? Not always. This really depends on the material of the drapes. Heat-resistant thermal drapes made from microfibre or polyester can help keep the heat out, but the most popular choices for hot, tropical countries like ours are cotton and linen. Light colours and light fabrics are the perfect combination to keep your home from heating up.
  3. Shutters – Have you noticed how old constructions invariably have wooden shutters for windows? These have a great retro look, but they are also the best option to keep the sun own. The wood is a great insulating material and completely blocks out the heat. The sliding shutters allow for controlled ventilation as well. For a more modern look, you can opt for shutter-style blinds that can be pulled down to block out the heat.
  4. Khus curtains – This is another age-old window treatment perfect for our local conditions. Window shades and curtains from vetiver roots, grass, and stalks have natural cooling abilities. When soaked in water, they absorb the indoor heat and take the temperature down a notch. Khus curtains are now manufactured to suit modern homes and come with a very contemporary look and small piping to allow the water drip system to function without any effort.
  5. Roman shades - Roman blinds are one of the few types of window furnishings that can be very stylish and offer a contemporary modern vibe. Roman blinds can be particularly effective in keeping the home cool and comfortable. Look at heavy fabric blinds rather than light materials. Pleated blinds, with or without cords, can be a great choice for your home.

Conclusion

Your choice of window dressings and shades will depend on several factors, such as décor choice, ease of maintenance, and budget. Your choice of the type of window furnishings should also factor in the amount of comfort and privacy it brings your home.
